A lot of people nonchalantly react when you tell them you're hiking the Appalachian Trail. They smile politely, and follow up with a question along the lines of "That'll take you about two weeks, right?" Not exactly.. It's always fun to inform these individuals that the A.T. spans over 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine. The follow up questions usually pertain to why am I doing it, am I going alone, and is it actually safe. For redundancys sake, I'll tell you here.

My desire to hike the Trail has something to do with a totally separate adventure my dad and I embarked on in the summer of 2007. Riding a bicycle across the United States was an idea that I joked with him about years before, and not long after the introduction of the thought, we started seriously planning. That summer we cycled just under 3,000 miles from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic. This trip got me hooked on the thought of adventure. The people we met, the sights we saw, it truly changed my view of the world, and sent me back to high school with an outlook far different from my classmates.

Fast forward 6 years. I've got a great job as an independent contractor for media and event productions around the world. I love what I do, who I have the pleasure of working with, and the opportunities it affords me. However, it started really bothering me when I realized how much time I spent in front of a digital screen between work and social lives. We literally live on our phones. I wanted to take the time at this point in my life to get back out there and feel the sense of adventure and thrill that the '07 bike trip allowed for.

What started out as a joke a little over a year ago, blossomed into a real plan and a driven desire to hike this amazing trail. So that's the back story- there's the why. I'm not good at updating things regularly, nor have I ever had a blog before. I'm hoping that this will work out well, and I'll be able to share the last few months of my planning and the duration of my hike with you.

Just took a look at your website, Ryan, trying to remember when you might be starting out, not until May so doubtless you won't have need to bundle up against that harrowing 10 degrees bekiw,,,
It's fun to imagine you setting up your tent first iinside, then backwards...but so smart of you to get fully acquainted with your gear. Can hardly wait for summer and your arriving in the N.Adams vicinity with your dad! Be well, dear, you sure are on handsome son-of-a-gun! (oldtimer's languge for buff, etc.) XJX GB! (God Bless)
