Planning For Backcountry Self-Reliance

Alike long-distance hiking adventures, planning the gear for an overland expedition - even if it's just for a weekend adventure - takes time and thought. When you pull out of the driveway and head towards the mountains, or any other remote area, it's important to know that you have the gear on board to take care of yourself in a variety of situations. This includes food, water, campsite gear, recovery equipment in case the vehicle gets stuck, redundant forms of mapping, and communication abilities for areas without cell service.

Below is a list of the installed equipment carried on the WK2 Grand Cherokee, as well as a break-down of the gear carried in three different Pelican brand watertight/crushproof cases. They're broken up by category as best as space would allow to enable us to grab the necessary case for whatever task was at hand. This system, although not perfect, served us well for the month-long trans-Canada expedition in the summer of 2017, as well as the entirety of our overland trips in 2018. There has been a fair bit of discussion as to what we will do to improve the set-up for future adventures, but for now this is how the rig is set up during our time away from Boston when we're reliant on the Jeep as our base camp and primary mode of exploration.
