Requirements of Winter:
The Appalachian Trail was a great hike, but one that only required what's called 3-season gear. My tent was made with a solid tub section and mesh netting for great summer ventilation, which when paired with a 20-degree down sleeping bag made for a cozy place to spend the night. With a hike that started in frigid temperatures and all kinds of icy precipitation from Georgia through the 5,000+ foot evelations in the Smoky Mountains and later included 90-degree nights in the valleys of the mid-Atlantic coast, I needed gear that was versatile enough to change with the weather and keep me comfortable throughout.
When it came to a 273 mile winter thru-hike in Vermont's Green Mountain range, I needed to focus on having gear that is strictly designed for the rigors of winter use and weather. I needed to buy a new backpack, sleeping bag (rated for much colder temperatures than my 3-season 20 degree bag), tent, clothing, and water purification system. I already owned a plethora of wind and waterproof jackets that have proven very useful on previous winter hikes, and added some crampon foot wear in order to keep a good grip on ice and snow in the mountains.
The investment in winter gear wasn't cheap, but in the long run I chose high quality gear that will serve me well on both this specific thru-hike and future winter adventures.
