The 100 Mile Wilderness

7/21/2014

I have officially entered the 100 Mile Wilderness. The final section of the Appalachian Trail, this is 100 miles of woods with no access to civilization save for two dirt roads that are over 40 miles from the nearest town. Cell service will not exist, and should anything go wrong I'll be reliant ont GPS device for emergency services. That all being said, my bag is loaded with food and supplies, and I'm heading off into the last chapter. Santa got rather sick last night and took a slow day today, so I'm alone as I begin this. I'm hoping he can catch up, but if not I shall be hiking by myself to the base of Katahdin. I'll arrive in Baxter State Park on Friday, hopefully having hiked the Wilderness in 3 days. Most SOBO hikers take 10-15 days, and most NOBO hikers 6-7. I'll be pushing myself, cautiously.

I figured I'd post one more photo. See you on the other side.

Good luck on this final 100 miles. Be careful by yourself.

If you weren't so fast, I'd be there step-by-step for these last 100 miles...
So, on Saturday your Mom and I will meet you and I'll climb Mt Katahdin with you on your last AT summit. I'll bring the beer!

Your last blog makes me think of the Apollo astronauts' "See you on the other side" as they approached the moon, knowing that they would be incommunicado with Mission Control and all of civilization until they came back around. Stay safe! Cyberhugs!

I'm sure anyone who sees this comment already is, but, check out Ryan's progress on the "Location" tab!
Great daily mileage through what sounds like a really rough section.

While I can not wait to read the blog of the finale days and Ryan's insights about his journey of a lifetime, at the same time I selfishly will miss the daily stalking of his progress and reading the real life adventures of a real life guy meandering through the mountains.

May the Trail bless you with with the best of what you are hoping for while reaching the summation of your adventure!
